Eipsode 3 – “free her from old copper” and finish the bilge

Lets start with the highlight as usual. A summary clip of these days (done bei Benni again)

At the beginning of any boat refit I assume one just sometimes looks away when stuff is too messy. The electrical wires were definitely one of those things. After a while of staring at THIS

we decided we would neither ever understand what was going on here, nor will we be willing to trust this 20-40 year old spaghetti dish. So we ripped it out. Not only the obvious stuff, but anything we could get our hands on.

For example this:

And then everything that stretches from here – only leaving cables behind boards so we can use them later on to pull new ones.

The thing is: Back in the days you had a lot of instruments and since stuff was not energy efficient they all needed quite some electricity which means they needed their own fuses which means they needed their own circuit –> LOTS OF CABLES

We only need one going to the mast for lights and maybe wind. Then another one for indoor lights and some outside. And the rest of the hightech stuff (speed, position, heading, map and maybe even depth) is going on one smart tablet…. that – if at all- needs some charging every now and then. So this is supposed to look very clean once we are done with it.

Then we cut open a stretch at the top of the boat to make a lane for new LED spots and to have an open “canal” where we want to put our new cables towards the front. And there was a lot of… hidden nails that we almost destroyed a saw on and a ton of rotten foam that was basically already pure dust….. yeah…. fun.

this is in between, now it looks much more beautiful. and just wait for the larch wood we going to place in there hmmmm

What else did we do?

  • we found like a little “bilge in the back” that was pretty nasty. We dicided to leave it in an acceptable state but dont do the entire process of grinding and painting here.
  • we finally finished painting the bilge
  • and then we wanted to try out the TERCOO and grinded our first piece of “outside” hull. These Tercoo things (google it) are a genious invention. If you dont grind down your skin with it in less than one second they are pretty good at getting any many layers of paint from any surface really really fast.

We had our first visitors – Johanna and Ariel. Had a couple of real mate teas and they helped us to tie her down for the first big winter storm of the season.

Here some more impressions of these days.
